Jazz in Lublin is looking beyond familiar forms this September, with improvisation, experimentation and new collaborations at the centre of the programme.
The 16th Lublin Jazz Festival, Forever Ahead, returns to Centrum Kultury w Lublinie for its September edition from 7 to 13 September 2026. Following the festival's July programme, the second part of the 2026 edition places particular emphasis on premieres, international artistic encounters, improvisation and experimental music.
For audiences accustomed to thinking of jazz primarily through established styles and concert traditions, the September programme offers a different perspective. Here, jazz becomes a meeting point for contemporary composition, electronics, free improvisation, interdisciplinary performance and newly developed artistic projects.
The festival is organised by Pracownia Muzyka+ / Centrum Kultury w Lublinie, with international cultural partners also involved in selected projects.
An intimate setting for contemporary experimentation
The September edition begins before the main concert weekend. From 7 to 9 September, musician Natalia Kordiak will lead workshops in the Sala Kameralna at Centrum Kultury. Registration is required for those wishing to participate.
The workshops lead into the programme on 10 September, when two concerts connected with the project are scheduled. At 7:00 p.m., a premiere will follow the Natalia Kordiak workshops, with free admission. At 8:00 p.m., Natalia Kordiak will perform a solo concert in the Sala Widowiskowa, also with free admission.
The sequence reflects one of the festival's central ideas: contemporary music can develop through interaction, experimentation and the exchange between artists and audiences.
Rather than separating education from performance, the programme places the two alongside each other, allowing a creative process to lead directly into the concert setting.
Jazz without a fixed boundary
The Forever Ahead concept is particularly concerned with what happens when jazz moves beyond established boundaries.
The September programme brings together free improvisation, avant-garde jazz, electroacoustic music, electronics and contemporary composition. It also creates space for interdisciplinary work and international collaboration, with several premieres and new artistic projects forming part of the programme.
That approach gives the festival a distinctly contemporary-art character. The emphasis is not simply on presenting finished works, but on creating circumstances in which artists can meet, experiment and develop new ideas.
One of the international strands involves the Italian Cultural Institute, connected with Antonio Raia's performance on 11 September. Another is the Polish-Lithuanian project Echoes of Union, developed in connection with Lithuanian cultural partners in Poland.
These collaborations reflect the festival's wider interest in connecting Lublin's cultural scene with artistic activity beyond Poland. At the same time, the concentrated setting at Centrum Kultury gives the September edition an intimate character.
A different kind of festival experience
The September programme is described as an "intimate but intense" complement to the July edition. That distinction is important because it helps explain what makes this part of the festival different.
There is no suggestion of a conventional large-scale outdoor music event. Instead, the September edition centres on a cultural institution in the heart of Lublin and on artists working with sound, improvisation and new forms.
For the city, this creates another dimension to Lublin's cultural calendar. The festival provides a setting where audiences can encounter contemporary jazz not simply as a genre, but as a form of artistic exploration.
The title Forever Ahead captures that direction. It suggests a festival interested in what comes next, whether through new compositions, unexpected combinations of sound or encounters between artists from different cultural backgrounds.
For audiences, that can mean approaching the concerts without the expectation that jazz must conform to familiar definitions. The September edition instead invites listeners into a space where uncertainty, experimentation and interaction are part of the experience.
In that sense, Lublin Jazz Festival's most interesting contribution may be its willingness to treat jazz as unfinished. Sixteen editions into its history, Forever Ahead continues to look towards new possibilities rather than simply repeating what has come before.
